Going for Gold!
11th June, 2011
While the world’s elite athletes are busy preparing for the 2012 London Olympics, we, at Smailes Goldie, are gearing up for a challenge of our own a little sooner...
As a firm, we have always been committed to supporting worthy causes, which is why we are delighted to be taking part in the UK200Group’s Not the Olympics 2012 campaign, which aims to raise £250,000 for the Alzheimer’s Society and will see member firms relaying an Olympic-style torch across the UK.
The event kicked off in Perth, Scotland, last month and saw the torch being relayed from there to Glasgow, Stockton-on-Tees, Middlesbrough, Scarborough and Harrogate. The relay must be done by walking, running, cycling or, indeed, any other innovative mode of transport other than a modern car – anything goes just as long as the torch reaches the Olympic Stadium in November.
The torch will be relayed to Hull today by Holeys chartered accountancy firm. Our stint will see us setting off with the torch from the Humber Bridge Car Park tomorrow morning, Sunday 12th June, and travelling 82 miles to hand it over to Mitchells of Chesterfield. A big thank you to Freetown Sports, Prospect Street, for donating the bicycles we'll be using and to J D Engineering for providing a vintage truck to help us on our way.
