New managing partner for Smailes Goldie

Ian Lamb has become the new Managing Partner at Smailes Goldie Chartered Accountants, in Hull and Barton-upon-Humber, after the retirement of John Wilkinson.

Mr Lamb, who trained and qualified at Smailes Goldie and became a partner in 1983, at the age of just 25, now heads up the two offices and the 80-strong staff. He now hopes to oversee the continued success and development of Smailes goldie as an independent firm.

He said: "The first thing I want to do is to retain the reputation for professionalism we have as well as good relations with staff and clients. We have quite a number of specialisms here and extremely high standards. We will continue to develop these specialisms so more people think of us as the first port of call for that specialist advice. Many of our biggest clients started off as small companies many years ago. Hopefully we have contributed to their success."

Mr Lamb claims the biggest challenge for accountants currently lies in helping clients overcome tough trading conditions.

"At the moment the clients themselves are operating in a different environment and we need to help them adapt to that environment. There is certainly a reduced level of corporate finance transactions in the market, partly caused by limited backing provided by the banks."

However, he isn't worried by the trend among some accountancy firms to merge into larger scale organisations.

"I have absolute confidence in our future as an independent firm. People are frightened and think they need a certain level of size, but we don't need to be frightened by anybody in terms of the work we can deliver to any top business."
