'Olympic' Bike Ride for Charity

Staff at Smailes Goldie have taken part in a nationwide event, organised by the UK200 Group, to raise money for the Alzheimer's Society.

The whole event, which will see more than 300 professionals taking part across the UK, started in Perth, Scotland, last month when an Olympic-style torch began its relay from there to Glasgow, Stockton-on-Tees, Middlesbrough, Scarborough, Harrogate and then to Hull. The torch was then taken by Smailes Goldie who relayed it to Chesterfield.

Mark Sharpley, Partner at Smailes Goldie and Chairman of the UK200 Legal Group, said:

“It was for a great cause and one we were all keen to support.  We’re very proud of everyone who took part and we hope that the money that’s being raised will really benefit people suffering from this dreadful condition.”

UK200 Group member firms are able to use any means of transport, except for a modern car, to relay the torch!  Our team, including Partners Ian Lamb, Mark Sharpley and Nicki Shipley, along with Ben Thiim, Karen Maden and Abigail Gunn, cycled  the 82 miles to Chesterfield, with a vintage 1972 Commer truck in support.   The torch is expected to reach the Olympics Park in Stratford, London in November when the UK200Group will hold their annual meeting.

Local firm JD Engineering kindly donated the use of the vintage truck and a driver, while Freetown Sports donated the bicycles.  It’s hoped the whole event will raise £250,000 for the Alzheimer’s Society.

Ray Nash, Area Fundraising Manager for Alzheimer’s Society, said:

“We are delighted the UK200Group has chosen the Alzheimer's Society to benefit from their epic fundraising challenge.  What an exciting and novel way of raising funds ahead of London 2012.”

“The Alzheimer's Society supports people to live well with dementia today and funds research to find a cure for tomorrow. We rely on voluntary donations to continue our vital work.”
