Over £5000 Raised for Yorkshire Cancer Research
4th August, 2011
It may have been a wet and windy day, but that didn’t deter the staff from Smailes Goldie Chartered Accountants from completing the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge in memory of two friends and colleagues who lost their lives to cancer.
A 27-strong team of walkers and 7 helpers, from our offices in Hull and Barton-upon-Humber, had trained hard for the 24.5 mile trek, which included 5000 feet of climbing. Amazingly, all managed to finish in less than 12 hours, the official time it’s meant to take to complete the challenge, despite it being wet, misty and extremely slippery underfoot. A few members of staff even fell into bogs.
Special praise must go to Luke Taylor and Mike Stocks (pictured) who finished in just under 9 hours!
Graham Pullen, who organised the event, said:
“It was great how everyone got stuck in to raise money for such a worthy cause. The weather may have been dreadful, but that didn’t affect our spirits. We’d like to thank everyone who sponsored us. We have already exceeded our £5000 target – and money is still coming in.
We’d also like to thank our sterling team of helpers who provided us with much needed refreshments throughout the day.”
Pam Cavanagh, Secretary for the Beverley committee of Yorkshire Cancer Research said:
“This is an incredible amount of money raised and will be well spent on research through the Yorkshire universities and their associated teaching hospitals, who are all working to achieve a world without cancer. Congratulations to everyone who took part in the event made even more challenging by the wet and misty conditions.”
Anyone wanting to donate can still do so by visiting http://www.justgiving.com/smailesgoldie. They can also donate by text! All they have to do is text the code AEXK90 followed by the amount they’d like to donate to 70070.
