Ian is the firm’s Managing Partner. He trained and qualified here at Smailes Goldie Group before becoming partner in 1983 at the age of 25. He specialises in complex tax planning issues for all types of businesses and has developed a high level of expertise in corporate acquisitions, disposals and reconstructions, having acted for many years for one of the UK’s most active corporate acquirers. Along with Jeremy Allison, Ian has built a team of corporate finance specialists within the practice, who carry out due diligence and related transactional work. Ian is highly experienced in acting as lead adviser, frequently assisting with contractual negotiations, and is considered to be one of the leading specialists in dealing with tax deeds and warranties. Ian’s high level of expertise in all areas of tax, particularly in relation to corporate transactions, gives the firm a unique service to offer their wide ranging portfolio of clients.

Having extensive experience within the corporate area, Nicki specialises in growing family-owned and managed businesses and has a particular interest in the agriculture and healthcare sectors. She also heads up Smailes Goldie Group’s practice in Barton-upon-Humber. Nicki joined Smailes Goldie Group straight from school and was one of the youngest Chartered Accountants in the UK when she qualified in 2000. Training plays a vital part in the success of Smailes Goldie Group and Nicki now oversees and mentors all the firm’s trainees throughout their traineeship. Nicki heads up our team of healthcare specialist accountants who provide expert advice and guidance on all aspects of financial accounting, taxation and business advice for the healthcare profession. She has gained particular expertise in understanding and supporting small to medium-sized owner-managed businesses including GP practices and businesses in the ophthalmic and dental care sector.

Jeremy heads up Smailes Goldie Group’s corporate finance department which specialises in servicing transactional deals for all types of businesses.
Along with Ian Lamb, he has built a team of corporate finance specialists who service clients at key stages of business development, carrying out due diligence and related work.
Jeremy also gained the ICAEW Corporate Finance qualification in 2006.
Over the last few years, he has increasingly been involved in forensic accounting and has been called upon to act as an expert witness in many disputes, including matrimonial/divorce cases, loss of profits, professional negligence and shareholder and partnership disputes.
Jeremy trained and qualified within a national practice in Leeds and has been a Partner here since 1999.

After training and qualifying at Smailes Goldie Group, Martin became a Partner in 1996.
With over 25 years’ experience as a general practitioner, he offers comprehensive business planning, wealth protection and tax mitigation advice to families and private clients with small and medium sized businesses.
He has also built and developed a unique specialism in the rural business sector, including the many diversifications agricultural clients are now pursuing, and is currently Chairman of the North East UK200 Agricultural Group. His specialism extends to renewable energy, and he is familiar with the issues and regulations that underpin its growth as well as its overall value to clients.
Martin helps businesses find finance and grant assistance to supplement traditional banking finance and oversees Smailes Goldie Group’s tax and trust department.

With a background in industry and having developed the business services group within a national practice, Mark became a partner in 1989. These credentials give him a unique mixture of skills and expertise which he brings to his role as general practice partner at Smailes Goldie Group. Mark’s expertise involves strategic planning, raising finance and handling the development of family businesses. Several of his clients have grown into multi- million pound trading companies. A specialist within the Charities and Legal sectors, Mark is also Chairman of the UK200 Legal Group and presents Profit Improvement Programmes to lawyers.

A general practitioner, with a special interest in tax planning and mitigation.
Steve’s clients range from owner managed businesses to international corporate groups and cover a wide variety of traditional sectors, like engineering, construction and processing industries, as well as those in the ‘new economy’ alike.
Steve has a keen interest in technology and innovation and provides valuable tax and business advisory services to clients in this area, including Research and Development enhanced tax allowance claims and innovative corporate structures.
Steve also has extensive experience assisting new businesses with essential start-up, tax and compliance advice.
After graduating from Hull University’s Business School, Steve joined Smailes Goldie Group in 2001, and gained a National Order of Merit prize in the ICAEW taxation paper on the road to qualification!
Steve became a Partner in April 2012.

Peter has been with Smailes Goldie Group since graduating with a Maths degree from the University of Hull in 2002, but his relationship with the firm dates back to 1998 when he undertook a work experience placement there. It was as a result of this placement that the Partners invited him to apply for a role after graduating.
Peter is a general practice Chartered Certified Accountant and has expertise in sectors including engineering, logistics, technology, fishing and retail.
He also has particular expertise in international matters, such as advising overseas businesses moving into the UK and UK-based businesses trading overseas.
His clients range from owner managed businesses to complex groups.

Luke joined Smailes Goldie in 2009 as a trainee chartered accountant, having graduated with a first class honours degree in Maths from Bath University and went on to qualify with the firm. Luke is a general practice Chartered Accountant and has experience working across a wide range of business sectors including media, technology, engineering, not-for-profit and processing industries. His client base includes owner managed businesses and large corporate groups as well as charities and other not-for-profit organisations. Luke has an extensive working knowledge of the academies sector and has worked with a number of academy clients during their initial conversion period and beyond. He has been a member of the firm’s academies team since he joined the firm and has progressed quickly through the team to Associate level and his client base in this sector includes a number of the firms large Multi Academy Trusts.
