Smailes Goldie Group, the Hull and Barton-based accountancy, tax and business advisory firm has promoted two new Partners with expertise in advising family businesses, as well as a new Associate.
Directors, Ben Thiim and Victoria Shannon joined the partnership on Thursday 1 April 2021. Both are members of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP), a global association for professionals advising families across generations.
Ben is a tax specialist with a focus on private client and trust tax for UK and international clients, as well as corporate tax planning. He is a member of the Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT) and holds the STEP advanced certificate for the UK taxation of international clients.
Victoria advises rural businesses and families on a wide range of matters, including tax planning, and trust accounts and taxation matters. She holds the FCCA accountancy qualification and is also a member of STEP.
Ben and Victoria’s appointments mean Smailes Goldie Group has become a 10-Partner firm, bolstering the senior team as the firm works to support clients, including family businesses, from across the region and beyond in rebuilding and recovering from the Coronavirus crisis.
Meanwhile, Manager, Billy Cowell, has been promoted to be an Associate of the firm and will be made Partner on 1 April 2022. He specialises in delivering audit and assurance services to growing companies, owner-managed businesses and corporate groups.
Ben said: “Working closely with our clients to help them achieve their goals has always been central to our ethos as a firm, but this approach has never been as important as it has been during the pandemic and will be as we embark on the economic recovery.
“I am looking forward to being able to build and strengthen my client relationships as a Partner, working closely with families and businesses to achieve their goals as we recover from the pandemic.”
Victoria added: “Agricultural and landed estates clients are facing some significant challenges at the moment in what is an increasingly complex sector.
“Building long-term trusted relationships, together with striving to deliver an excellent level of service is key to successfully assisting generations of family members.
“I feel privileged to join the partnership and I’m excited to help shape the future direction of such a fantastic firm.”
Billy added: “I am incredibly proud to have been promoted to Associate. Smailes Goldie Group is a first-class organisation and I am looking forward to continuing to make a real difference for our clients.”
Mark Sharpley, Partner at Smailes Goldie Group, said: “We are delighted to welcome Ben and Victoria to the partnership.
“Their advice is already highly regarded and valued by our clients and is set to become increasingly important as the economy recovers from the pandemic.
“Meanwhile, Billy has proven his ability to deliver pragmatic, high-quality solutions to clients, which is why he is on the road to joining the partnership next year.”
Ben, Victoria and Billy’s promotions are the latest in a series of appointments at all levels of the firm as it gears up to support the region’s economy as it recovers from the pandemic.
