Smailes Goldie has welcomed its 2025 cohort of trainees, as it continues its long tradition of training the next generation of accountants, tax advisers and payroll professionals.

The new recruits, a combination of school and college leavers, as well as graduates, have joined the Hull, North Lincolnshire and North Yorkshire-based accountancy firm between July and September and are getting to grips with their new roles.

Smailes Goldie has been training the next generation of accountants for more than 125 years and was recently ranked second in the UK’s Top 50 SME Apprenticeship Employers 2025.

Its training programme is highly regarded, with many of its Partners climbing the ranks from trainee to senior leadership.

“Our new trainees bring energy, curiosity and a real appetite to learn,” said Ian Lamb, Managing Partner at Smailes Goldie.

“We’re proud to invest in structured training, mentoring and exam support so they can build outstanding careers in our profession and contribute to the success of our clients from day one.”

Studying a range of qualifications, including the AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians), ATT (Association of Tax Technicians), CIPP (Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals) and ACA (set by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales), the latest group will gain practical and technical skills alongside their studies.

“We’re delighted to once again welcome such a strong cohort across our offices this year,” added the firm’s HR Manager, Donna Brasier.

“Following on from our recent recognition as the nation’s second-best apprenticeship employer, it is great to see that our learning and development pathways that combine practical experience with professional study are opening doors to long-term progression within the firm.”
