Wilfred Smailes commenced as a Sole Practitioner

Ed Hamilton Drury and WM Percival Holtby (who were in practice), joined forces with Wilfred Smailes and were named ‘Smailes, Drury & Holtby’.

Goldie, Campbell & Robins were established in 1910 and were based on the Avenues.

A fourth Partner, Richard Swift Gray, joined and the partnership changed name to ‘Smailes, Holtby & Gray’.

‘Smailes Holtby & Gray’ had an office space on the upper floors of the Prudential Assurance building based in Queen Victoria Square.

On 8 May at 3am, the Prudential building was hit by a bomb and the tower of the building was the only part remaining. One person escaped from the building, Arthur Maslin, who was the Air Raid Warden and an employee of ‘Smailes, Holtby & Gray’.

‘Smailes, Holtby & Gray’ and ‘Goldie, Campbell & Robins’ merged and renamed to ‘Smailes, Goldie & Co.’ and they moved their premises to Sutton.

Ian Lamb, our current Managing Partner joined Smailes Goldie & Co. When Ian joined the firm, there were 7 partners and approximately 50 employees.

Smailes Goldie joined UK200 Group. Smailes Goldie moved from the premises in Sutton and took over the Hull office of Churchill, Mallet & Co. Smailes Goldie also joined the UK200 Group of Practising Chartered Accountants. This gave the firm a number of benefits such as access to specialist training and advice, access to regular networking events and conferences, and access to other professional advice and guidance.

Smailes Goldie moved into our own purpose-built offices at Regent’s Court in Hull, and this remains our current and our largest office.

Smailes Goldie acquired ‘Martin Fish and Co’, which practised in Hull and Barton and this gave the firm an office in North Lincolnshire.

Smailes Goldie acquired David Turner & Co. which became Smailes Goldie Turner. Approximately 12 employees came over following the acquisition and Smailes Goldie Turner focused more on the Agricultural Sector.

In April 2022, Smailes Goldie acquired three new offices in North Yorkshire from Stephen Watson, who had traded as Moore Stephens. Approx. 30 employees came over following this acquisition and grew our headcount to approx. 160 employees across the 5 offices (Hull, Scarborough, Pickering, Kirkbymoorside, and Barton upon Humber) .

2024 - Smailes Goldie - Partners

Smailes Goldie acquired a further office from JWP Creers, in Selby. As we stand today, we have 12 partners and just over 200 employees working across six offices.
