The Opportunity:

At Smailes Goldie, we are proud of our heritage, our strong local relationships, and the way we support our clients and each other. We believe in building long-term partnerships, offering practical advice, and creating an environment where people can thrive.

We are now looking for a Director to take ownership of our Smailes Goldie Watson offices, someone who shares our values, leads with integrity, and is passionate about delivering a high-quality, personal service.

This is a key leadership role for a general practice specialist who enjoys working closely with clients, developing people, and contributing to the continued success of a collaborative and forward-thinking firm.

The Role:

  • Take overall responsibility for the Smailes Goldie Watson offices, ensuring strong performance while maintaining our supportive and inclusive culture.
  • Develop trusted, long-standing relationships with clients, understanding their businesses and supporting their ambitions.
  • Provide clear, practical advice across accounts, tax, and business matters.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team where individuals feel valued, supported, and encouraged to grow.
  • Foster a collaborative working environment, both within the sites and across the wider firm.
  • Contribute to the strategic direction of Smailes Goldie, helping shape our future while respecting our values and heritage.

About You:

  • ACA/ACCA/CTA qualified (or equivalent).
  • A well-rounded general practitioner with strong experience across accounts, tax, and advisory.
  • Someone who takes pride in building genuine, long-term client relationships.
  • A people-focused leader who is approachable, supportive, and leads by example.
  • Commercially aware, with a balanced approach to client service and business success.
  • Aligned with our values: Professional, Proud, Passionate and in doing the right thing.

Business Development & Growth:

  • Build and strengthen relationships with local professional contacts—including solicitors, banks, and land agents across North Yorkshire—to generate new work across accounts, audit, payroll, and tax services.
  • Take an active role in networking and representing the firm within the local business community.
  • Develop relationships with smaller accountancy firms to introduce and promote Smailes Goldie’s advisory offering (working closely with internal specialists).
  • Contribute to the growth of the Smailes Goldie Watson sites, with a focus on sustainable, relationship-led business development.

Why Join Us?

  • A leadership role with real autonomy and influence.
  • A firm that genuinely values its people and relationships.
  • A collaborative, supportive leadership team.
  • Competitive salary and benefits package.
