Hull-based accountancy firm Smailes Goldie is once again backing the region’s future business leaders by sponsoring the annual Smailes Goldie Award for Business Studies at Pocklington School.
This year’s recipient is Oscar Cowling, a standout member of the school’s Young Enterprise team, Hear the Hound Shine.
Oscar impressed with his creativity, commitment and entrepreneurial drive during the 2025 Young Enterprise Company Competition.
The team created a business selling handcrafted dog collars made by the Kenyan Masai, supporting both style and a conservation cause through the Samburu Trust.
They later added dog care packages and had a strong sales day at Selby Market back in March.
Their hard work took them to the Humber Finals, where they impressed with a professional report, an eye-catching stand and a confident presentation, earning themselves the Best Teamwork Trophy.
Oscar’s leadership throughout the year has been rewarded with the Smailes Goldie Award for Business, which includes a commemorative trophy and a £50 Waterstones gift card, presented at the school’s annual prizegiving on Friday 4 July.
Ian Lamb, Managing Partner at Smailes Goldie Group, said: “We’re proud to support this award each year and to recognise the brilliant work being done by students like Oscar.
“He and the team demonstrated a great combination of creativity, teamwork and entrepreneurship.
“The idea to create a socially conscious product was thoughtful, and they clearly put a lot of effort into every stage of the competition.”
Although no one from the firm could attend in person this year, Smailes Goldie continues to support the next generation of entrepreneurs.
“Supporting initiatives like this is one small way we can help encourage the future business leaders of tomorrow. Oscar and the team have set the bar high for future entrants.”
