Exceptional student Kushal Kasivel picked up the 2023 Smailes Goldie Award for the Best Application of Mathematics at the recent Hymers College Speech Day.
The award, which has been sponsored by Hull accountancy firm Smailes Goldie for several years, recognises outstanding achievement in the field of Mathematics.
Kushal achieved four A* grades at A Level in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Further Mathematics. On top of this, he gained an additional A* grade for his Extended Project Qualification (EPQ).
Although Kushal’s fantastic A Level results were worthy for him to be considered for the award, it was his extra-curricular Mathematical activities that saw him claim the top prize, which included a trophy and a Waterstones book voucher.
After having achieved the Gold award in the Chemistry Olympiad a year early, Kushal went on to repeat the feat the following year and qualified for the British team for the International Chemistry Olympiad. His Mathematical knowledge also paved the way for entry into the International Physics Olympiad, an invitation he had to turn down due to a clash with the Chemistry equivalent.
“We are incredibly proud of Kushal, and he is a worthy winner of the Smailes Goldie Award for the Best Application of Mathematics,” said School Governor Nicki Shipley. “Many of his teachers will say that his brain works quicker than that of anyone else they have ever met!”
Managing Partner of Smailes Goldie, Ian Lamb, said: “It is a real honour for us to sponsor this award, and on behalf of everyone at Smailes Goldie, we’d like to congratulate Kushal on his success. His achievements are astonishing, and he has a very promising future ahead of him.”
Kushal, who was placed in the top one per cent of students taking part in the UK Maths Trust (UKMT) challenges, has applied to study for a degree in Pure Mathematics at University next year.
