Leading independent accountancy firm, Smailes Goldie, has celebrated the success of a student at Hymers College’s during its annual Speech Night.
The ceremony took place on Thursday 17 September at Hull City Hall, honouring the academic and school life achievements of students from the previous school year, including the presentation of major prizes to Year 13 leavers.
This year’s recipient of the Smailes Goldie Prize was Vedansh Prasad. Vedansh achieved outstanding A Level results in Computer Science, Mathematics and Further Mathematics and Physics, earning A* grades in Maths and Further Maths and an A in Computer Science and Physics.
Throughout his studies, Vedansh applied mathematical thinking and logical reasoning to work through complex problems.
His projects included an evolution simulator that modelled emergent behaviours by combining decision trees and A* pathfinding with genetic inheritance, allowing users to explore how populations evolve in changing environments.
He also built an ambitious quantitative trading research platform, combining statistical analysis and machine learning with financial modelling to investigate whether data-driven strategies could generate profitable investment decisions.
The Smailes Goldie Prize recognises the application of mathematics and Vedansh’s work was praised for combining exceptional technical ability with curiosity and perseverance, underpinned by real intellectual rigour.

As part of its sponsorship, Smailes Goldie has also provided a £50 book voucher for the award winner, continuing a tradition it has supported in previous years.
Vedansh will now study Computer Science at Imperial College London.
